Announcement: new partnership project to support the Two Moors Way

Dartmoor Futures is pleased to announce a new partnership project with Dartmoor National Park Authority to support the Dartmoor section of the Two Moors Way.

The project has been made possible through a capital grant from Dartmoor National Park Authority and will be delivered by Dartmoor Futures in close partnership with the National Park Authority, the Two Moors Way Association and other partners.

The Two Moors Way is one of the South West’s most significant long-distance walking routes, linking Dartmoor and Exmoor across a coast-to-coast trail. On Dartmoor, it passes through a landscape of deep cultural, ecological and community importance.

This new programme will focus on improving the quality, accessibility and experience of the Dartmoor section of the route. It will support practical improvements such as signage, route infrastructure, access points and crossings, while also looking at the bigger question of what a high-quality 21st-century trail could mean for Dartmoor.

At its heart, the project is about more than maintaining a path. It is an opportunity to explore how recreation can support the long-term health and resilience of Dartmoor’s landscape, communities and heritage.

The work will consider how people enjoying Dartmoor can contribute positively to the place they are visiting, and how a stunning walking route can help support local businesses, volunteers, communities and environmental care.

The project will include partnership working, volunteer involvement, targeted infrastructure improvements and the development of a longer-term vision for the route. It will also contribute to Dartmoor Futures’ wider work around regenerative recreation and place-based collaboration.

“The Two Moors Way is a much-loved route through an extraordinary landscape. This project gives us the chance to look after the practical things that matter including clear signage, safe crossings, good access and a better experience for walkers, while also asking a bigger question about the future of recreation on Dartmoor.

“We want to explore what a 21st-century trail could look like: one that is welcoming, well cared for, rooted in local places and communities, and actively contributes to the long-term health of Dartmoor.”

The Two Moors Way is a well known and loved route across Dartmoor and this partnership, starting in the year that we mark 75 years of Dartmoor being designated a National Park,  will help improve the experience for walkers while supporting the care, understanding and enjoyment of the National Park.”

The project will run until March 2028, with a dedicated Project Officer employed by Dartmoor Futures and seconded to Dartmoor National Park Authority to support delivery.

Dartmoor Futures will share further updates as the work develops, including opportunities for partners, volunteers and communities to get involved.
